The computer games industry is set to take legal action against up to 25 000 computer users in Britain have have downloaded some of the latest game releases for free. Five of the world's leading games developers will demand a £300 out of court settlement from each user and taking them to court if they fail to pay.
It is estimated that as many as six million people in UK illegally share games over the Internet. The move comes after another gamer became the first person in UK to be ordered to pay damages to a manufacturer.
The unprecedented legal actions follows an increase in illegal downloads. Atari, Topware Interactive, Reality Pump, Techland and Codemasters, who make some of the most popular games including The Lord of the Rings, the Colin McRae Rally series and Operation Flashpoint, have vowed to clamp down on people who download game illegally.
They identify people who who download illegally by asking service providers to reveal personal information, including names and addresses of people using file-sharing websites.
